Painting: The School of Athens

Greek PHilosophy image.jpg

"The School of Athens is a well known painting by Raphael, a well known artist during the Italian Renaissance. It is a fresco painting made in the early 1500's, and depicts a large gathering of many people, several of which are famous philosophers. These include Plato, Pythagoras, Aristotle, Socrates, and Euclid. The painting was used for Pope Julius II's library, along with three other paintings of a similar art style. This was a common tradition in libraries at the time, to have paintings that show influential thinkers. The art did not directly communicate the ideas in philosophy itself, but shows the collaboration and contributions among many philosophers. "The School of Athens" represents both art in the Renaissance and philosophy over the years.
